I couldn’t help but choose this picture for today’s “Chin Up”. Why? you may ask. Well, for those of you who don’t know already, I use to live in Michigan, USA. Now however, I live in Queensland Australia. If anyone had to lose sight of the shore to travel the ocean, it was me. Australia is about 10,000 miles from where I use to live. Grant it, had you told me I would actually be staying in Australia I would have laughed. Not because I didn’t want to, or had no reason to, but just that things like this didn’t happen to people often. True that my mum had married an Australian and subsequently moved to Oz, but still. For this to happen to me? Yeah, right.
I was going for a visit to see my parents. Had never been in a plane before, ever, big or small. Now I was about to board not one but five different flights. The flying didn’t scare me, but the terminals did. Knowing my luck I’d get lost, or lose my luggage because I couldn’t figure out which turnabout they were on, or worse, I’d miss my flight completely. Luckily my father flew to Michigan and then back to Oz with me. Still it was a rather unnerving experience.
I had never been that far from “home” before. I had left the country a few times, to Canada, which I didn’t really count, as it was only a handful of hours to drive there. Aside from my venture to Canuck-land, I had only ever been to the surrounding states, and even then I could count those times without hitting double digits. This was something different entirely. This was almost as far from Michigan as I could get, almost.
In the end though, despite my nervousness, worry and excitement it has been the best decision I’ve made in my life, at least thus far. 😀 My point is, though my story holds this quote both literally and figuratively, the meaning remains the same. Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side, we are just too scared or too comfortable in our own little world to check out how the rest of the world really lives. In the end, make the choice to take a change and change your life. It could be the best thing to happen to you.
