DIY: Milk Bottle Luminaries

Untitled-4

This project was always one of my favourites.  I thought it looked so beautiful.  Of course, the fact that I love the night and candles probably has a big chunk to do with it.  You have to admit that candles at night do look stunning.  There are so many possibilities to this, whether you want to make something permanent, or just for your wedding, party or holiday.  These are easy recycled, upcycled luminaries take only minutes to make!

What You Will Need

  • Plastic Milk Cartons/Jugs
  • Sharp Scissors
  • Tea Lights (to use larger/taller candles, make sure the flame is not too close to the sides of the carton)
  • Something to use as a weight (such as sand, pebbles, or even just a couple of rocks).

What To Do

  1. Take your milk carton and rinse out thoroughly, I can’t stress this enough!  That last thing you want is a rotten milk smell.  😛
  2. Soak your jug in warm/hot water to remove labels.  Scrub gently to remove labels
  3. Cut a flap, so that it is still connected at the top, on one side of the carton, about an inch or two (2.5 – 5 cm) from the bottom.
  4. Place your weight into the bottom of the carton, through the flap you have just made.
  5. Place the tea light flatly and stably on the bottom of the carton, between your weights.
  6. Remove the lid to your carton.
  7. Take your luminary to its designated spot of choice, and light the tea light (by way of flap).
  8. Site back and enjoy!

Further Suggestions

  • 248901495_zJ36sx87_cTip #1: Silhouettes – Print/cut out some eyes, mouths or other silhouette pictures to tape/glue to the bottles.  You could even take a black marker and draw figures on them.

  • Untitled-1Tip #3:  Colouring – Try markers to make the luminaries a solid colour, or draw pictures.  You could also use a thin layer of paint, but it’s best to sand the plastic lightly first, so the paint as something to “hold on” to.  😉

  • Untitled-2Tip #4:  Crafty – Craft felt, paper or fabric can be a great way to turn your luminaries into awesome decorations.  Just cut and paste.  Don’t forget things like yarn, pipe cleaners, foam, and all other things crafty.

  • Tip #5:  Placement – Use these along driveways, walkways, as center pieces, window lighting, garden accents and anyway you like.
  • Tip #6:  When – Use them for parties, weddings, Christmas, Halloween, birthdays, or as long term lighting in gardens, yards, and so on.
